Lehman Families in the Parish of Schlosswil in the Emmental of Canton Bern, Switzerland, 1550-1725

Schlosswil was known as Wil or Wyl until 1902. Schloss being the German word for castle, the name might be translated "Castletown." It is a small parish but includes the hamlet of Oberhunigen. Schlosswil is noted here primarily because it has been said to have been the site of Anabaptist activity in a Lehman family. That appears in Delbert L. Gratz’s Wash Isch Dini Name (What is your Name), Masthoff Press, 1997, at p. 30. Dr Gratz’s basis for the Anabaptist assertion has not been found.

The town is located about three kilometers southeast of Worb. The first Lehman found to date in a record there is in 1653 when a Benedict paid his hay tax and then in 1660 with the baptism of his first child.

Schlosswil Family 1
..1. Benedict Lehman, b. abt. 1633. Since he was growing his own hay in 1653, we can probably assume that he was at least 20 years of age. In 1658 he m. Elsbeth Schupbach at Worb. This probably means that she was from Worb but not necessarily Benedict. The family appears to have been held in respect in the village, based on their baptism witnesses.
